Modern Medicine: Treatment for Common Cold, Coryza

All disorders of respiratory tract are not diseases or disorders but merely symptoms where precipitating cause lies somewhere else. First of all cold enters through nose and affects nasal passages, throat, larynx/pharynx lungs and finer air passages. If Cold is Controlled at the outset, rest of the symptoms may not develop or, if at all they surface, their intensity and virulence is quite easily manageable, without leaving any trace or room for any serious melady.

Causes of respiratory problems are triggred by inhalatation of pollens (allergic factor) dust, smoke, toxins, impure air odours, cold etc. Initially there may be fluent running from the nasal passages, throat membranes smart and there difficulty in normal breathing, crepitation, redness in nasal and throat passages. Cold and Cough are said to be the precipitatory factors of all the respiratory disorders. Attacks of asthma and allergy factors take longer to control but, then, other factors can be controlled and controlled without much effort.

Before resorting to any medical treatment, give nature sufficient time to arouse and safeguard natural healing power of the body by resorting to nasal saline water inhalation, inhalation of steam (plain) or medicated, avoiding known irritants like tablets, smoke and spiced Contents, inhalation of impure and toxic air/ gases, exposing body to sudden rise and fall of thermic changes, avoiding cold water-bath in winter/rainy season, using cold drinks/ eatables, inhaling dust, mites etc. If you can discern the precipetatory factors, on may not require any medicine or if at all necessary, even a low potency of one or doses may relieve you of the agony.

Remember, no medicine, howsoever costly and effective it might be, Cannot rid you of the problem (of any origin) if you fail to repeat the known precipitating factors because repeated attacks will take away natural resistance and, thus, open watergates for strange and Costlier drugs and the time will not be for away when the diseased body will not respond to any type of treatment.

General symptoms of Common cold, Coryza

Consequent upon any type of exposure, there is initial irritation in the nasal passage, sneezing, when tip of nose may redden, pain, thin water may start flowing therefrom. When mucus gets thickened, it may fall into the back portion of throat (Naso plarynx) and then, Cause smartness, itching, pains, redness, difficulty in swallowing due to scadling of tonsils (or even parotid glands) even liquids. Treatment:- Gargling with lukewarm saline water and inhalation with the same water will relieve the Congestion, headache and blockade. If no relief follows, take one tablet of Avil (25 mg) 6 hourly or still better take one tablet of Incidl in 24 hours. If cough persists take any cough syrup (like Corex, Phenergan. Phensidyl etc) one TSP with hotwater. After taking any of the drugs do not move out nor operate any machinery, any vehicle due to impact of drowsiness.

Protect from exposure and keep the chest warm. Avoid cold drinks/food but hot water may be had in plenty. If, however, there is no relief, Consult a doctor to find out differential causes of the malady. But do not delay treatment in any case. If the infection is quite severe, take a 500 mg tablet of Erythromycine 12 hourly. Apply Mendle’s throat paint 2-3 times daily, but not immediately after meals as it may cause Vomiting. Already generated cold can be effectively cured by a tablet of Allegro – only one tablet within 24 hours A tablet of Vitamin – c 500 mg – one tablet only – will build up resistance to cold and also rule out further possibility of frequent repetition of attacks of cold.

It is a myth to believe that an untreated cold lasts for seven days and a treated cold lasts for a week. Effort should be directed to forestall complications like bronchitis, broncho-Pneumonia, chronic Nasal Catarrh, congestion, Polypi etc
