The food will be deficient even if vegetables and grains find a place in the diet. During cooking some of the important ingredients get spoilt. Without any injury to digestion or the stomach, fruits could be easily consumed. These must be in the daily diet.
Money for the fruits?
There are many millions of our countrymen who are poor. Good fruits are not easily available for them. Even they spend for chillies, coffee and tobacco etc. The money saved out of this fruitless expenditure could be utilised for purchasing good fruits.
Children and adults require fruits to maintain their health. These can have their quota of fruits if the parent stops his habit of spending for tobacco, snuff, cigarettes. Chillies could be eschewed. The parent may not be addicted to smoking or chewing. From where could these good parents save money the Fruits? No need to worry. Variety of fruits
Man should take in some of the fruits fit for human consumption, every day. Not all fruits are costly. Apple, Grapes, Jam, Jackfruit, Lemon, Mango, Orange, Pappai, Annanas, Tomatoes etc, are easily available in our country for use.
Plantain
The most commonly available fruit is the plantain fruit. Scientists say that this does not contain much of protective food. All bananas are not to be rejected like that. There are others like Valai, the King-valai, and Mountain-Valai, etc. very tasty and good. A couple of this fruit will be useful for taking in every day. There will also be no constipation.
During the six months in the year, oranges and Sathukudi (Mausambi) will be available. Such juicy fruits are very good to the system. Small size oranges may be available cheap.
Ordinarily papai is found growing in the compound of houses in towns and villages. The pappai fruit is classed very highly. Some reject this as producing too much heat in the system. If taken in small quantities, lot of benefit will result. But the Pappai must have become fully ripe. In TamilNadu pregnant women do not ordinarily eat this.
Jam is available on occasions. Big size seedless variety is good for the body. This should not be eaten in large quantities. Disorders due to bile may ensue.
Lime fruit is available. Not understanding the importance of this fruit many have neglected this. This juice can be used with jaggery and in butter-milk and in soup for its benefits.
Dates are no doubt costly. Those who can afford to eat in quantities may take this as tiffin with dried raisins for a few days in the wee.
Pomogranates and black grapes are not also costly. Vlampalam is well known in Tamil Nadu. There is no necessity to make a fruit salad of all I he fruits and eat it with ice cream. We can mix every day one or two varieties. One must eat two ounces of fruits every day.
