Diet Cure: Treatment Chart for Backache

I. An all-fruit diet for 3 to 5 days. In this regimen, take three meals a day of fresh juicy fruits such as apple, pear, peach, papaya, grapes, orange and pineapple.

II. Thereafter, gradually adopt a well-balanced diet on the following lines:-

1. Upon arising: A glass of lukewarm water with half a freshly-squeezed lime and a teaspoon of honey.

2. Breakfast: Fresh fruit such as apple, grapes, pear, peaches, pineapple, papaya and a glass of milk, sweetened with honey.

3. Lunch: A bowl of freshly-prepared steamed vegetables such as carrot, cabbage, cauliflower, squash and beans and two or three whole wheat chapatis.

4. Mid-afternoon: A glass of vegetable or fruit juice.

5. Dinner: A large bowl of fresh green vegetable salad. Use all available vegetables such as lettuce, carrot, cabbage, cucumber, tomatoes, radish, red beets and onion and sprouts such as alfalfa and mung beans with lemon juice dressing.

AVOID: Tea, coffee, sugar, white flour, all products made with sugar and white flour, all refined foods, fried foods, fatty substances, curd, flesh foods, condiments and pickles.

B – OTHER MEASURES

1. Safe exercises like walking, swimming and bicycling.
2. Weight control.
3. Sleep on firm mattress.
4. Never bend from the waist to lift any object, but squat close to the object.
5. Neck and shoulder exercises.
6. Apply hot fomentation and radiant heat to the back.
7. Yoga asanas like bhujangasana, shalabhasana, halasana, uttanpadasana and shavasana.
