Modern Medicine: Drugs to be Avoided in Children

Drugs quite often used in Allopathy
(For disease of diseases of children upto 30 days and above)

1. Minerals and Vitamins Vitamin A, D, K and its analogues
2. Anti-diarrhoeal drugs and anli-amaebic drugs
3. Fever and Pain Relievers
Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Diclominic Sodium, Paracetamol, Mafenemic Acid, Morphine
4. Antibacterial Drugs
Gentamycin, Chloramphenicol, Nemocycin, Ampicillin, Cephalosporins, Amikcin, Erythromycin, amoxyllin, Sulphanomides, Furazolidine.
5. Nasal decongestants and Cough mixtures
6. Hormones Estrogens, Progestins Hydrocortisone, Dexamethasone

Drugs to be Avoided

As far as possible abstain from using undermentioned drugs for children and, if at all their use in necessary, it must always be under the guidance of a physician.
Note: Generic names of medicines are given first, followed by brand/Trade names. In market only Trade/brand names are popular.

Tetracyclines, Hostacylin, Achromycin, Alcyclin etc – It gets deposited in gums and teeth and renders them yellow
Ledercort, Kenacort – Cause adverse effects of high magnitude
Durabolin, Ovabiolin – Inhibits growth of bones
Wysolone, Hostacortin-H – Long lasting adverse effects
Dexamethasone Dexabolin, Durabolin – Has very low margin of safety in children
Chloramphonical Chloromycetin Redor, Paraxin – Bone marrow depression
Stanozolol Analgin, B-Complex, Betamethasone, Winstrol, Novalgin, Uttragin – Inhibits growth of bones
Becosule, Becadex cobadex, Betnelon Betacortil – Bone marrow depression, Excessive use may cause loose motions

Warning about use of cortilosteroids in children Side-effects (Reffered to as ‘long lasting effects’ above)

1. Sodium and Water retention
2. Congestive heart failure
3. Delayed wound healing
4. Changes in skin colour
5. Menstrual irregularities
6. Diabetes mellitus and Pancreatitis.
7. Psychological disturbances
8. Nausea and Vomiting
9. Headache and hypertension
10. Osteoporosis and spontaneous (bone) fractures
11. Potassium loss
12. Suppression of bone growth in children
13. Increased intraoccular pressure
14. Cataract
15. Muscle Weakness and myopathy

Note: Above-mentioned side-effects could occur to adults and children alike. Moreover, risks are far greater in children due to great many implications which are rather quite serious; hence these drugs must be used when specifically indicated – but used for shortest possible time and in minimal dose. Above all, never use any medicine of your own, but only when prescribed, and monitored by a doctor.
