HOARSE VOICE AND APHONIA
Those who forcibly use their voice quite repeatedly, sing/ talk more loudly than their voice can actually endure are the Victims. Aphonia means loss of voice (even if partial) due to interference with tension and due to approximation of the vocal cord. Usual causes are syphilis, laryngitis, T.B, new growths within the throat, repeated infections etc. Cause aphonia or where forcible use of voice or exposure are the main causes of hoarse voice, in addition to cold and catarrh.
Before any medicine is taken, resist your temptation to overuse of voice or, still better, do not talk, at all, for some time or till such time as the hard pressed throat membranes soothe and return to previous normal state.
Reference may be made to the line of treatment referred to under ‘Laryngitis”, previously. Use of voice should not be resorted to, at all, or used to bare minimum necessity. Here, prevention should take precedence over treatment, the latter being secondary in priority line-up.
APHASIA
It is not aphonia / hoarse voice. Aphasia occurs due to any injury or disease of the external layer of the brain. It is actually loss of power of speech. Any sudden mental upset/trauma may also cause this disorder. In some cases even speaking and reading may also become difficult. As for treatment it is better to approach a speech theapist/E.N.T surgeon for treatment and Corrective therapy. In some cases help of some psycho therapist may be needed as medicines seem to play only a very negligible role.
