Modern Medicine: Treatment for Catarrh

Excessive secretion of thick mucus or phlegm by the mucus membrance of the nose, nasopharynx or air passages. Here the mucus is generally yellow / pale, adheres to nostrils, is difficult to detach, gives foul smell and, if removed forcibly, there may be bleeding even. In chronic stage there is pain at the root of those, fever, headache, pain over the eyes/eye brows, feeling of out of sorts and severe aching over entire body.

Treatment

Resort to steam inhalation to loosen toughened mucus – it will resume flow and ease congestion. If there is no relief use Nasivion, or Nazalen / Enderine / Dristain Nasal drops to facilitate breathing, remove blockade of nasal passages, and take a tablet of wikoryl or Dristan – thrice daily. To offset infection take a 2-hourly dose of Septern-D.S. for 2-3 days. Efcorlin Nasal drops may be used, if other nasal drops fail to dispel catarrhal congestion, but do not use frequently. If there is much irritation and pain in the throat, take some throat lozenges.

General:- Keep your body fully protected from exposure to cold winds. Avoid AC or fan. Take light and blind diet, perferably liquids (lot) but no cold food or drinks at all, Saline water gargles will be of much benefit preferably in the morning and at the time of returning to bed (2-3 hours after taking meals).

Consult some E.N.T specialist if nasal passages are narrow or blocked and do not yield to ordinary measures, as ear, nose and throat get simultaneously affected due to impact of catarrh – Whether acute or chronic
