Could you elaborate upon the education of a Music Therapist?
The education of a music therapist is unique among college degree programmes because it not only allows a thorough study of music, but also encourages examination of one’s self as well as others. The undergraduate curriculum includes coursework in music therapy, psychology, music, biological, social and behavioural sciences, disabilities and general studies.
Entry level study includes practical application of music therapy procedures and techniques learned in the classroom through required fieldwork in facilities serving individuals with disabilities in the community and/or on-campus clinics. Students learn to assess the needs of clients, develop and implement treatment plans, and evaluate and document clinical changes.
At the completion of AMTA-approved academic training and internship, the student is eligible for admission to the certification exam administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists, Inc. Upon passing the national examination administered by the CBMT, the student acquires the credential Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC). Coursework requirements vary; contact individual American universities for specific information.
What is the future of Music Therapy?
In western countries, particularly the United States, the future of music therapy is promising because state-of-the-art music therapy research in physical rehabilitation, Alzheimer’s disease, and psychoneuroimmunology is documenting the effectiveness of music therapy in terms that are important in the context of a biological medical model. It has been proved beyond the pale of doubt that certain music therapy models have conclusive treatment benefits for specific problems.
Music therapy is finally being recognised globally. Newer concepts are emerging by the day, new vistas are beckoning and a whole new breed of therapists and new music therapy curricula are being forged by the minute. The future is exciting and alluring for anybody keen on traversing uncharted waters and making valuable music at the same time.
