BRYONIA
Physical Generals: One of the CHIEF Characteristics of Bryonia is AGGRAVATION from ANY MOTION AND CORRESPONDING RELIEF FROM absolute rest, either mental or physical. Children dislike to be carried or to be raised. Pains stitching. Tearing, worse at night. Worse from motion, inspiration, coughing; better by absolute rest and lying on the painful side (pressure). (Stitching pains better and worse are opposite : Kali c.)
Excessive dryness of mucous membranes of entire body (lips to anus); lips and tongue dry, cracked, parched; stool dry as if burnt; cough dry, hard racking, with scanty expectoration; urine dark and scanty; GREAT THIRST for large quantities at long intervals.
Complaints : when warm weather sets in after cold days; from cold drinks or ice in hot weather; after taking cold or getting hot in summer, from suppressed menses or milk, or eruptions of acute exanthema.
MIND : Irritable, inclined to be vehement and angry. In delirium talks constantly about his business; or desires to “go home” (although he is at home).
Cough dry, gagging on entering a warm room. Constipation inactive, no inclination; stool large, hard, dark, dry, as if burnt. Diarrhoea during a spell of hot weather. Worse in the morning, or moving even a hand or foot. FEMALE : Mammae heavy, of stony hardness, hot and painful; must support the breast (Phyt.). Nose bleed when menses should appear (vicarious).
Pricking, darting stitching in the joints muscles and inner parts. Headache as if the head would split open, worse by motion, stooping; better by pressing and closing the eyes.
CALCAREA CARB
Tyler describes Calc. thus : With the chalky complexion goes : Fatness without fitness – Sweating without heat – Bones without strength – Tissues of plus quantity and minus quality — More flabby bulk, with weakness and weariness. Disposed to GROW FAT, and fatigued easily. Sweaty head and palms;
TAKES COLD easily. Craving for eggs, indigestible things like chalk. Tardy development of bony tissues with lymphatic enlargement (glandular). Open fontanelles. Tardy teething and walking. Big head and large hard abdomen like an “inverted saucer”. Short of breath on slight exertion. Thick milky, gushing leucorrhoea. Menses too early, too profuse, too long lasting. Least mental excitement causes profuse return of menstrual flow. Galactorrhoea or deficient milk with breasts flabby, not swollen.
CHILD : Slow teething, late walking. Sour offensive diarrhoea during dentition. Profuse head-sweat wetting the pillow. Skin cold like a snake’s; clammy hands.
MIND : Horrible, sad stories disturb her profoundly. Fear of disease, of contagion, of insanity. Indolent, sits and thinks of little affairs. Suspicious; thinks people look at him and observe his mental confusion.
Craving for eggs, salty things. Aversion : meat, fats, warm food. Disagree : Milk.
In duration of glands: maxillary, sub-maxillary, inguinal, parotid, cervical or mesenteric (tubercular). Curvature of spine, esp. dorsal. Nasal polypi with loss of smell. Painless hoarseness. Vertex icy cold (hot : Sulph). Feet cold and damp, AS IF WEARING WET STOCKINGS.
